73% of Twitter Accounts Have Tweeted Fewer Than 10 Times

According to a report from Barracuda Networks, a Web security company,  most of Twitter’s 50 million accounts merely follow other users rather than posting their own messages.  73% of Twitter accounts have tweeted fewer than 10 times .  As of December 2009, only 21% of Twitter account holders were what Barracuda defines as “true users,” meaning someone who has at least 10 followers, follows at least 10 people and has tweeted at least 10 times. …more…

Twitter Processing 40 Million Tweets Per Day - Double Since Aug 2009

Pingdom has published an analysis of the number of tweets that Twitter is processing, and the results show that Twitter continues to grow.  As of December, Twitter is processing more than one billion tweets per month.  January passed 1.2 billion, averaging almost 40 million tweets per day. This is significantly more than Twitter was processing just a few months ago, double what it was in August 2009.

This is the first time that I’ve seen data showing activity from all sources, including third-party applications via Twitter’s API.

Moms are More Social

According to a Retail Advertising and Marketing Association survey conducted by BIGresearch, women with children at home are more likely to use Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter than average adults. Additionally, 15.3% maintain their own blog.

BIGresearch’s Simultaneous Media Usage Survey was compiled for the Retail Advertising & Marketing Association, a division of the National Retail Federation. The survey polled 4,206 moms and 22,624 adults 18+, and found that 16.5% of moms use Twitter (vs 15%), 42% use MySpace (vs 34%) and 60% use Facebook (vs 50%).

Moms like to share: 93.6% of mothers regularly or occasionally seek the advice of others before buying a service or product and 97.2% said they give advice to others about those products or services they purchased.

Global Time Spent on Social Media Sites up 82% Year over Year

According to The Nielsen Company, global consumers spent more than five and half hours on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in December 2009, an 82% increase from the same time last year when users were spending just over three hours on social networking sites.

Globally, social networks and blogs are the most popular online category when ranked by average time spent in December, followed by online games and instant messaging. With 206.9 million unique visitors, Facebook was the No. 1 global social networking destination in December 2009.   …more…

Marketing Profs has released an enormous new report on “The State of Social Media Marketing,” which details social media usage, strategy and predictions for 2010 based on consultations with a panel of social media experts, surveys of more than 5,000 MarketingProfs readers, and comScore panel data.

Twitter Becoming More Global; Surge in Usage in Brazil, Indonesia, Germany

Sysomos has updated their analysis of tweets by geography, and has found that the use of Twitter is becoming more widely distributed around the world.  The company also found that almost no one is using the geo-location API tool that Twitter launched last August, with only 0.23% of all Tweets tagged with geo-location. Among the most significant differences was a surge in Brazil, which accounted for 8.8% of unique users, an increase of more than four-fold from 2% in June. Twitter users in Indonesia accounted for 2.4% of the population, compared with less than 0.5%, while Twitter users in Germany rose to 2.5% from 1.5%. …more…
