Foursquare U.S. Visits Increase 50% Dec 2009 - Jan 2010

Hitwise reports that location-based game Foursquare has seen U.S. visits to the site jumped 50% in January.  Traffic is up 200% since November.  Foursquare’s base is estimated to be about 350,000 users.

Mobile Browser Access to Facebook and Twitter Surges

Audience measurement firm comScore’s March 2010 study of social networking access via mobile browser concludes that mobile access to Facebook has increased 112% in the last year, while Twitter has increased 347%.  Nearly a third of smartphone users accessed social networking sites through their mobile browser in January, up more than 8% from a year ago.

Time Spent On Social Networking Sites Increased 82% In Last Year

According to The Nielsen Company, global consumers spent more than five and half hours on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in December 2009, an 82% increase from the same time last year when users were spending just over three hours on social networking sites.  Social networks and blogs are the most popular online category when ranked by average time spent in December, followed by online games and instant messaging.

Facebook was the No. 1 global social networking destination in December 2009; 67% of global social media users visited the site during the month, spending nearly six hours per month on the site. Twitter.com continued as the fastest-growing in December 2009 in terms of unique visitors, increasing 579% year-over-year, from 2.7 million unique visitors in December 2008 to 18.1 million in December 2009.

Facebook Now Top Social Media Site in Germany

According to Google Ad Planner, Facebook had 13 million unique visitors in Germany in the month of December.   Competitive social media network VZ-Netzwerke (which includes SchuelerVZ, MeinVZ and StudiVZ) fell to 12 million, making Facebook the top German social networking destination for the month.

Twitter Grows to 73.5 Million Uniques

TechCrunch reports:

After hitting a flat spot last fall, Twitter’s worldwide growth is pointing in the right direction again. According to worldwide comScore figures released today, Twitter’s own site attracted 73.5 million unique individuals in January, up 8% from December, 2009 (when it had 65.2 million visitors). Its annual growth rate is still a phenomenal 1,105%. A year ago, Twitter.com attracted only an estimated 6 million visitors.

Facebook Now Drives More Traffic to Web Sites Than Google

Where Facebook is Sending Traffic

According to Web measurement firm Compete Inc., Facebook has passed search-engine giant Google to become the top source for traffic to major portals like Yahoo and MSN, and is among the leaders for other types of sites.

Using a snapshot of traffic from December, Compete determined that 15% of traffic to major Web portals like Yahoo, MSN and AOL came from Facebook and MySpace. The lion’s share of that traffic, 13% came from Facebook.  Google, which has profited handsomely from directing Web surfers to their destinations during the past decade, was third with 7%, just behind e-commerce site eBay, which had 7.6%. MySpace was fourth with just under 2%.

Social Networks Now Account for 11% of US Traffic

comScore’s “The 2009 U.S. Digital Year in Review” report is a great summary of social media trends.

According to the report, nearly four out of five US Internet users visited a social networking site in December 2009.  Social networking now accounts for 11 percent of all time spent online in the US.  Both social networking leader Facebook and Twitter both posted triple-digit growth.
