91% Use Mobile Phones to Socialize
A November 2009 Ruder Finn study of 500 U.S. adults who “use their mobile device to go online or to access the Internet” revealed that Americans are spending nearly three hours a day on their mobile devices. More people are using the mobile web to socialize–91%, compared to 79% of desktop users.
45% report posting comments on social networking sites, 43% are connecting with friends on social networking sites, 40% are sharing content with others and 38% are sharing photos.

70% of Marketers Plan to Increase Budgets for Social Media Marketing
According to a Jan 2010 Econsultancy survey of more than 1,000 US and UK marketers, conducted in association with ExactTarget, 46% of companies plan to increase their marketing budgets in 2010, and 66% will increase their investments in digital marketing channels. Additionally, investments in digital marketing will increase by 17% in 2010, and will account for 24% of overall marketing budgets. Marketers who focus on “brand reputation” as a measure of marketing effectiveness are most likely to shift their budgets from traditional to digital channels.
- 70% of the companies surveyed plan to increase their budgets for social media marketing (e.g. Facebook, Twitter).
- 56% plan to increase mobile marketing budgets.
- Only 17% of companies surveyed are increasing their print media budgets, compared to 41% who are decreasing spending.
'Max the Tampax' Mobile Social Campaign Designed to Connect With Teens
Procter & Gamble has created a mobile social campaign designed to strike down young girls’ prejudices about tampons and educate them about the benefits of its Tampax brand, while leveraging the intimacy of the mobile phone and the adding viral elements to leverage teen girls’ propensity to share.
P&G tapped mobile marketing agency Phonevalley and media planning company Starcom MediaVest Group for the launch of the Tampax mobile campaign to reach girls ages 13-17 in France. It supports a Web campaign launched to promote the character of “Max the Tampax” and create a community around him on the Skyrock.com Web site.
App Usage to Soar in 2010
Mobile app investment should grow significantly this year, according to a report from DM2PRO and Quattro Wireless. Fewer than one-half of marketers created either a mobile or social app in 2009, but most plan to invest in a mobile app this year. The iPhone is the platform of choice, followed by Android. Among those marketers who had an app in 2009, Facebook was the leading platform.
Engagement was the top reason to choose either mobile or social as an app platform, but social sites were perceived as better for many top goals, including engagement, audience targeting, sharing and branding potential, and reach. Mobile scored higher on creative control and persistence.
75% of Japanese social networking is mobile-only
