68% of Companies Spend Less Than $5000/Yr on Social Media Marketing
Econsultancy’s 59-page The Value of Social Media Report, produced by in association with Online Marketing Summit, is based on an online survey of more than 400 client-side marketers and agency respondents, which took place in December 2009 and January 2010. Findings include:- Facebook is the Web property mostly commonly used in social media, with 85% of companies using this site as part of their marketing strategy. This is followed by Twitter (77%), LinkedIn (58%) and YouTube (49%).
- Almost two-thirds of respondents (61%) say their organizations are “poor” (34%) or “very poor” (27%) at measuring ROI.
- Almost two-thirds of companies (61%) say that they “have experimented with social media, but not done that much.”
- A third of companies (32%) do not spend anything on social media marketing and a further 36% spend under $5,000 a year.
- A third of respondents (32%) are getting less than 1x the return on investment from social media.
Social Media Adoption by U.S. Small Businesses Doubles Since 2009
The third wave of results from the Small Business Success Index™ (SBSI) sponsored by Network Solutions and the Center for Excellence in Service at the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business reports social media adoption by small businesses has doubled from 12% to 24% in the last year.
Nearly one out of five small business owners are actively using social media in their business, including blogs, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. 61% of the respondents indicated that they use social media to identify and attract new customers. 75% of companies surveyed have a company page on a social networking site, and 45% expect social media to be profitable in the next twelve months.
50% of Companies Were Spammed from Social Networking Site in 2009

A survey of 500 companies found a 70% increase in spam and malware attacks via social networking sites in 2009, according to security firm Sophos.
Facebook topped the list as the perceived riskiest of the major social-networking sites, followed by MySpace, Twitter, and finally LinkedIn.
The Sophos report (PDF) said that more than 50% of the companies surveyed were spammed through a social-networking site last year and that 36% were hit by malware from such a site. …more…
57% of U.S. Workers use Social Media for Business Purposes
According to a new IDC survey of 4,710 U.S. workers, 57% use social media for business purposes at least once per week. Additional findings from IDC’s social business research include:
- 15% surveyed reported using a consumer social tool instead of corporate-sponsored social tools for business purposes
- The number one reason cited by U.S. workers for using social tools for business purposes was to acquire knowledge and ask questions from a community.
- While marketers are the earliest and largest adopters of social media, these tools are now gaining deeper penetration into the enterprise with use by executive managers and IT.
- Software companies will increase their social software offerings significantly as customer demand steadily increases and “socialytic” applications will emerge, fusing social/collaboration software and analytics to business logic/workflow and data.
Small Business Prefer "Passive" Social Media (For Now)
A Business.com study of more than 1,700 small business owners or managers currently using one or more social media resources to help them get the information they need to do their jobs on a day-to-day basis finds that small business leaders currently show a strong preference for “passive” social media sources of business-relevant information — such as viewing webinars or reading online ratings, reviews and company blog posts — over those that require more active interaction with others. However, the use of social media resources requiring more active participation, such as asking business-related questions through Twitter or online question-and-answer forums, is set to rise among small business leaders as they gain access to effective online business networks. …more…
